My family went camping in the San Juan mountains of southern Colorado every summer. My dad would rent a jeep and drive us up old mining roads into the high peaks; tall firs and wildflowers were everywhere.

Our favorite spot was this icy pool near camp. We'd jump into the snow-melt water and splash around until our lips turned blue and Mother made us get out. All six of us and our spouses return to this beautiful spot whenever we can, but we no longer jump into the freezing water.
