Deep in the sandstone canyons of Escalante, a polished red wall reflects back the afternoon sun. Down in the cool shadows cottonwoods and elm trees spread green leaves that would burn on the heights above, blasted by too much sun. Up there cedar, piñon and juniper rule. Here green leafy things thrive in the shaded canyon.
