Lynn Kearny - Biography

Lynn Kearny, Landscape Painter in Pastels

"It feels like I'm there"

Trained in organizational development, instructional design and human performance technology, Lynn was an organizational consultant for 30 years and published five textbooks used in those fields. She previously served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Sierra Leone West Africa for four years. Throughout her career she used graphics for communication, strategic planning and visual aids. Her graphic work has been used in the US, Canada, Europe, Africa and Asia. Lynn participated in art classes at Merritt College in Oakland, where she specialized in painting with soft pastel. She has studied under several prominent pastelists in California and New Mexico.

Kearny grew up in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Los Alamos is spread out over mesa tops on the side of the Jemez Mountains, and is divided throughout by deep canyons. It looks across the Rio Grande valley to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, end of the Rockies. Behind town the Jemez rise to a great caldera, the Valle Grande. The mountains, cliffs and canyons of northern New Mexico are in her blood.

For 20 years her studio was in the Oakland Hills, looking across the bay to San Francisco. During that time she painted the coast and the Sierra Nevada. She has returned home to Northern New Mexico. Her studio is now in a hundred-year-old Albuquerque adobe near the Rio Grande. From here she goes out to do plein air paintings of the mountains, cliffs and canyons, or does finished studio pieces based on field sketches and reference photos from her travels in the Sierra Nevada, the Rockies and throughout the Southwest.
